Concrete Block Handling Safety Policy

This policy outlines the safety procedures for both new and experienced staff involved in the installation of Envirocon concrete blocks. Adherence to these guidelines is crucial for maintaining safety and operational efficiency.

1. PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKS

  • Equipment Condition: Ensure all lifting equipment is in good working condition and appropriate for handling concrete blocks.
  • Block Assessment: Verify that the weight and size of the concrete blocks are within the lifting equipment's capacity. Inspect blocks for any damage or weaknesses that could cause them to break during lifting.
  • Safety Inspection: Confirm that all lifting equipment is safe for use and has been properly inspected.

2.OPERATIONAL SAFETY

  • Qualified Operators: Only qualified and experienced operators, familiar with the equipment and lifting procedures, should operate the machinery.
  • Equipment Positioning: Position the equipment on a firm, level surface, clear of hazards and obstacles.
  • Proper Rigging: Use appropriate rigging and lifting attachments (e.g., slings or chains) that are suitable for the blocks' weight and size.
  • Controlled Lifting: Lift blocks slowly and steadily, avoiding sudden movements or jerks.
  • Load Control: Keep blocks close to the equipment during lifting to maintain control and avoid overloading or exceeding the equipment's rated capacity.

3.SECURING BLOCKS ON WALL

  • Block Security: Ensure that blocks are securely locked into place using a share key before detaching the lifting device. This prevents shifting or falling.

4. OPERATOR SAFETY

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Operators must wear appropriate PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves.
  • Clear Communication: Maintain clear communication between the operator and all personnel involved in the lifting operation.
  • Awareness of Environment: Be aware of potential hazards, such as overhead obstructions or nearby personnel, throughout the operation.

5. POST OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES

  • Equipment Shutdown: Properly shut down and secure all equipment after use.
  • Inspection: Inspect the equipment and all lifting attachments for any signs of damage or wear after each use.

6. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

For further guidance on safe lifting practices:

  • Refer to New Zealand’s WorkSafe guidelines on the safe use of earthmoving equipment.
  • Consult the New Zealand Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA) for additional resources on lifting and rigging safety.

This policy serves as a general guide. Specific requirements may vary based on location, equipment, and operational conditions. Always refer to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and relevant industry standards for detailed guidance.
